This is one of the most common misunderstandings we see in nail salons. A client may ask for a Shellac manicure on their own nails without realizing that Bio Gel, builder gel, acrylic or another enhancement is already underneath the colour.

1. What Is a Shellac Manicure?

A Shellac manicure generally refers to a manicure finished with a gel-polish colour system. The nail is prepared, the colour is applied in layers and the product is cured under the appropriate lamp.

Why Shellac Can Be Confusing

Shellac and other gel-polish colours usually come in bottles that look similar to traditional nail-polish bottles.

Because of this, a client may remember seeing their previous technician using bottles and understandably believe that they only have Shellac on their nails.

The Bottle Does Not Tell You What Is Underneath

Seeing a technician apply colour from a bottle tells you what may be going on top of the nail. It does not necessarily tell you what enhancement product may already be underneath that colour.

A client can have Bio Gel underneath and Shellac or another gel-polish colour applied over it.

2. What Is Bio Gel?

Bio Gel is an enhancement product that can be applied over a client’s natural nails to provide additional structure, strength and shape.

Bio Gel does not necessarily mean that a client has artificial nail extensions.

Bio Gel Can Be Applied Over Your Real Nails

A Bio Gel overlay can be applied directly over the natural nail. That means a client’s nails can be completely their own natural length while still having Bio Gel covering the nail plate.

Natural Nails Do Not Always Mean Bare Nails

This distinction is extremely important.

You can have your own natural nails while still having Bio Gel covering them.

Natural Length vs. Bare Natural Nail

Natural length means the length belongs to your own nail and was not created using an extension.

Bare natural nail means there is no enhancement product such as Bio Gel, builder gel or acrylic covering the nail.

Those are two different things.

3. Can You Put Shellac Over Bio Gel?

Yes. Shellac or another compatible gel-polish colour can be applied over Bio Gel when appropriate.

But applying Shellac colour over Bio Gel does not automatically make the entire appointment a basic Shellac manicure.

The Bio Gel Underneath Still Matters

If Bio Gel is already covering the natural nail, the technician must examine the existing enhancement before applying new colour.

The technician may need to check for:

“I only want a Shellac manicure on my own natural nails.”

When the client arrives, the technician examines the nails and discovers that Bio Gel is already covering the natural nails.

If the client wants that Bio Gel to remain, the technician is not working directly on bare natural nails.

There is still an enhancement layer between the client’s natural nail and the new Shellac colour.

What the Client Wants vs. What the Nails Require

Two separate questions need to be answered:

What colour does the client want?

And:

What professional service does the existing nail structure require?

These Answers Can Be Different

A client may want Shellac colour while still requiring Bio Gel maintenance underneath.

The colour choice does not automatically determine the entire service.

What a Nail Technician May Need to Do

Depending on the condition of the existing Bio Gel, the technician may need to:

• Shorten or reshape the nails

Why Simply Painting Over It May Not Be Appropriate

If the Bio Gel underneath is grown out, lifting or damaged, simply placing another colour over the top does not address the condition of the enhancement underneath.

A professional technician should first assess the existing product and determine what preparation or maintenance is required.

6. Why Your Service May Change After the Technician Examines Your Nails

When you book an appointment online or over the telephone, the salon can only work with the information you provide.

If you say, “I need a Shellac manicure,” the salon may initially book a Shellac manicure based on that information.

A Telephone Booking Is Not a Physical Nail Assessment

The person answering the telephone cannot physically examine what is underneath your existing colour.

Once you arrive, the technician may discover existing Bio Gel, acrylic, builder gel, extensions or another enhancement that was not mentioned during booking.

The Technician Should Explain the Difference

If the technician determines that the required service is different from what was originally booked, the professional approach is to explain what they see and why a different service may be necessary.

The Price Should Also Be Confirmed

If that change affects the price, the revised total should be communicated before the revised service begins.

7. Why the Final Price Can Be Different From the Original Quote

A telephone or online quote is based on the service requested using the information available at the time.

If the technician discovers that the nails require a different service after examining them, the price can also be different.

Different Services Require Different Work

A basic Shellac manicure, Bio Gel refill, Bio Gel maintenance service, enhancement removal, nail repair and custom nail-art service can involve different amounts of technician time, preparation and product.

They therefore may have different prices.

Additional Nail Art May Also Affect the Total

Custom designs, French tips, chrome, detailed artwork, 3D elements or multiple accent nails may involve additional charges beyond the base nail service.

A Common Example: Shellac Colour Over Existing Bio Gel

Here is a simple example of how this misunderstanding can happen.

Step 1: The Client Books a Shellac Manicure

A client calls a salon and requests a Shellac manicure because they want a new Shellac or gel-polish colour.

Step 2: The Technician Examines the Nails

When the client arrives, the technician identifies Bio Gel underneath the existing colour.

The client may genuinely believe they only have Shellac because they remember their previous technician using bottles of colour.

Step 3: The Existing Bio Gel Must Be Considered

The technician explains that Shellac colour can still be applied, but the existing Bio Gel cannot simply be treated as though it does not exist.

If that Bio Gel requires filling, filing, balancing, repair or other maintenance, the technician must address it before completing the new colour service.

The Finished Colour and the Underlying Service Are Different Things

The client can still leave with the Shellac colour they wanted.

But the professional service performed underneath that colour may be a Bio Gel maintenance or refill service, not simply a natural-nail Shellac manicure.

“But They’re My Own Nails” — Can I Still Have Bio Gel?

Yes.

This is another common source of confusion.

A client can have completely natural nail length while still wearing a Bio Gel overlay.

Bio Gel Does Not Automatically Mean Extensions

Bio Gel can be applied directly over the client’s natural nail without adding an artificial tip or extension.

The nail underneath is still the client’s real nail, but the nail plate is not bare because an enhancement is covering it.

Your technician may need to professionally remove the existing Bio Gel before working directly on your bare natural nails.

Removal Can Be a Separate Service

Professional removal requires additional technician time and may have a separate charge depending on the product and condition of the nails.

After removal, your technician can assess your natural nails and determine whether a natural-nail Shellac manicure is appropriate.

What About Nail Art and Additional Designs?

Nail art is another area where pricing misunderstandings can occur.

Nail Art Is Not Always Included in the Base Service

If I want Shellac colour, why might I still need a Bio Gel service?
